February 2010
Dear Resident:
A budget committee under the leadership of Board President Lew Keyser has worked diligently since the beginning of the school year. At a recent meeting they presented a list of topics that should be reviewed for possible cost savings.
One of these was reconfiguration of our elementary schools. With a drop in enrollment, would a reconfiguration permit staff reduction and other expenses without loss of instructional services? As a result the Board requested that we set up a process. Although any final decision rests with the Board, the members wanted an open review process to research and to gauge public opinion. Both cost and instructional value of any reconfiguration will be weighted.
The first step in this review process was taken on Monday evening February 1st. A lively crowd of concerned parents and educators gathered to voice concerns and listen to the rationale for undertaking this study. Leslie Bohacek will represent the Board on a committee that will be formed to carry out the research and discussion.
Any change in reconfiguration WILL NOT be initiated before September 2011 and change will only be made if a belief that cost savings will be realized and our educational program and service to students will not be diminished.
Attendance was taken at the meeting and many residents and staff members expressed an interest in joining the committee. All meetings will be open to the public and your absence at the February 1st. meeting does not preclude your joining the committee. Please call the District Office for information on our meetings. Those who signed up will be contacted about future meetings.
The Board and I look forward to a professional and open dialogue as we move forward to research and eventually make a decision on this controversial topic.
Sincerely,
Charles A. Molloy
Superintendent of Schools
