PTO News
Yearbooks: This year we had a Gertrude Hawk Fundraiser to help defray the cost of yearbooks. The sale was a huge success and enough money was raised to enable us to give each student at Otego Elementary School a FREE YEARBOOK! The yearbooks will be given to students on Monday, June 23, 2008, when they arrive at the school. We have a few available yearbooks left over to sell to whom ever may be interested, including grandparents. They will be available on Tuesday at the Awards Assembly for a cost of $10.00. Contact a PTO member if you would like a yearbook and can not make it to the Awards Assembly. This yearbook has 100 pages and is filled with photos of many school events!
Box Tops & Campbell’s Labels: Please continue to save Box Tops & Campbell’s Labels over the summer. Please encourage family members, neighbors and friends to save their Box Tops and labels for you. Box Tops money is generally saved for playground improvements which will be needed in the upcoming years.
Postings from our Principal
A Fond Farewell
Farewell to Mrs. Karpinsky who is retiring at the end of this school year! We will also miss Mrs. Pucci who will be leaving Otego Elementary to relocate with her family to Virginia. Mrs. Fields, our After School Care Program Director, will be leaving to find a full time teaching position, and lastly, our lovely Elementary Counselor, Mrs. Baltodano will be moving to the warmth of California with her husband. Otego Elementary wishes all these fine ladies well!
Babysitting Course Offered
The Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Program in Delaware County will hold a babysitting workshop for children, ages 11-15, to will learn babysitting responsibilities, characteristics of children, selecting toys and games, supervision skills, accident prevention, emergency actions and the basic care and feeding of children. After attending four consecutive classes, which will be held Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 at the Delaware County Resource Center/Cornell Cooperative Extension in Hamden, from 9-11:30 a.m., students will receive a completion certificate. The cost is $15. Class size is limited. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, call Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County at 607-865-6531 or e-mail kas29@cornell.edu. If calling in the evening, leave a message with the name of the child, his or her age, address, and phone number. A confirmation letter will be sent. Although this class does not certify a babysitter in the sense that the Red Cross certifies a course participant in CPR or as a life guard, itʼs intent is to prepare the youth taking the course to be a better babysitter and to provide some basic techniques for child-care.
End of the Year Awards Assembly
Our End-of-the-Year Awards assembly will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. Upon arrival you may go directly to the auditorium. You do not need to sign-in at the office for this special event. We hope to see you there!
Field Day
Our Field Day is scheduled for Friday, June 20, 2008 with the rain date being Monday, June 23, 2008. This is a day filled with fun activities for the students, faculty and staff and is held outside. Please be sure your child is dressed properly for the weather and comes to school wearing sneakers. Please apply sunscreen to your child before they arrive to school. Do not send the sunscreen to school – we may not apply sunscreen without written parent permission. Our wonderful PTO has purchased t-shirts which we plan to tie dye with team colors for field day. Students can have their classmates sign the t-shirts and keep as a momentum! Thank you PTO!

Mrs. Barber Leaving Otego Elementary School
With a very heavy heart, I wanted to let you all know that my last day at Otego Elementary School will be June 30, 2008. On July 1, 2008 I will start as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction with the Windham Jewett Central School District. This was a very difficult decision and my heart breaks every day knowing that I will be leaving the best job I have ever had! Greeting your children everyday and working with such hard working, talented, and dedicated faculty and staff has been such a joy! Please know how blessed you, and the Otego community, are to have such a child-centered and nurturing school environment for your child to spend their earliest years.
Otego Magnets
Beautiful Otego Elementary magnets were sent home last week. We ordered these not only to decorate your refrigerator, but also to encourage parents to call the nurse should your child have to miss school or need a dismissal change.
Please Note
When filling out paperwork or writing checks for things at school, please DO NOT use gel pens.
STAR Assembly
Our last STAR assembly for this year will be on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 8:15 a.m. We hope you can join us even if your child is not receiving an award.
Student Footwear
As the weather (hopefully!) warms please remind your children not to wear high heels, open toed, open back shoes or flip flops to school. This type of footwear can truly be a safety hazard and can not be allowed in school!
